What I'm reading now - David Cole's "The Theatrical Event: A Mythos, A Vocabulary, a Perspective"

Right now I'm reading The Theatrical Event: A Mythos, A Vocabulary, A Perspective by David Cole. Considering the work I'm doing now, it's downright eerie. I'll post quotes and what not when I'm done.

I read portions of this book for a class I took, Politics & Performance Interfaces, sixteen years ago. I'm still pulling from those readings to integrate experiences I had as a rock musician in the 80's, and find recently, in doing dream work on a deep level, that Cole's concepts continually show up again in my processes. What an influences his ideas had on me. It's about time I read the entire book... altho I'm a little afraid that my brain might explode!! And maybe that would be a good thing! :)-- Gwyn Henry

Words, Words, Words

. . . a lot of it [fostering rather than smothering students' playwriting] has to do with finding a way to construct a dialogue about ongoing work that empowers the writer. A lot of it has to do with making sure there's a diversity of voices around you. A lot of it has to do with thinking of the writing program as a brain trust for writers, not as some infantilization in which the dramaturg gets the power. And basically trying to find a place where everyone's aesthetic in the room grows larger rather than smaller. There are many ways to do that. It's really not a hard thing to do.

I actually think of writing for the stage as not writing . . . It's about structuring, about gaps between the language that are really filled in by the collaborators and the process. It's all about indirection rather than a direct statement . . . It's like a three-dimensional chess game in a way. If I say this, will the director go in this direction?
