I can speak to Seattle, my home town, and what he writes about is totally true. It's a super liberal, left wing city.
When I moved to New York I realized it's easier to be liberal in a city like Seattle. Everybody is white* and has the same amount of money and education, so your alleged "open mindedness" is never, ever challenged.
*This isn't technically true. There are a lot of wealthy Japanese folks. There are also a lot of homeless Native Americans. I know there are a couple of black neighborhoods, too, I just never saw them.
